[He's not even going to acknowledge the rest of that, he doesn't want to talk about how different he had been and what that all means.]

Not the first I've heard that. [ But it makes him smile, broad and a little sheepish. He'd hurt family and many friends. Whatever the transformation had done to James' state of mind, he's glad he hadn't managed to make it worse. ]

Yeah. Guess stewing in it's not doing anybody any favors. [ He knows he'd gotten off comparatively light, traumatized younger siblings notwithstanding.

[He looks half amused and half annoyed, changing his direction pretty abruptly to head towards a different ruined building.]
