What the hell is punk?

[Because it doesn't sound like the way he uses the word, like when he calls Steve a punk. There's no dress style to being an idiot, is there?]

[aigue]

[What?

Renart has to stop, mid-hike, so that she can stare at him.]

You never learned what punk is?

[advanced]

[Okay, apparently that's a much bigger deal than he thought it would be. He shrugs, brow furrowed.]

Nope. I'm guessing it's something important, huh?

[aigue]

[She trots closer, frowning.]

Extremely important. You're aware of anarchy?

[advanced]

Sure, it's a political ideal. The lack of a government so everyone can govern themselves, right?

[Pretty much the antithesis of HYDRA ideals.]

[aigue]

Right. It's sort of like that, anti-establishment, anti-authoritarianism, pro-individual freedoms. With heavy rock music.

[It's great.]

[advanced]

[Sometimes, with how rigidly controlled his world has been for a long time, he forgets how much freedom most other people have to express themselves in any way they want. It's wonderful.]

I can definitely see you getting into something like that. You got any of that music on your little player thing?

[aigue]

I do, in fact. Quite a bit.

[She pulls her backpack off and digs around for her iphone, because of course she brought it. Who wouldn't bring jams on a camping trip?

Flicking through her songs, she settles on one and hits play.]

[At least this seems to be keeping her mind off the loss of Monty, she's seemed livelier ever since they hit the snow.

The song isn't much like anything he's heard before, and it's quiet surreal to be tramping up a mountain with music blaring into the silence. He waits until it's done, it just seems more polite, and then shrugs.]

Doesn't seem like you could dance very well to it.

[aigue]

Oh, you certainly can. It's a lot more informal than you're used to, though. You just - let go.

[When that one ends she plays another.]

You get everything out in a crowd. Your energy, your anger. It's fun.

[advanced]

[Oh... oh no. Bucky can't help the way his expression shifts into one of distaste at the new song.]

He doesn't sound like he's having fun, he sounds like someone's got a knife stuck in his ribs while he's trying to sing.

[And he should know, he's intimately familiar with the noises people make when they have knives stuck in them.]

[aigue]

Goodness, you're picky. That's a classic, you know.

[She huffs and switches to something a little less screamy.]

What about the Ramones?

[It's better than whoever that previous singer was, that's for sure.]

I guess, it's just-- different.

[He hesitates a second and then, suddenly, chuffs a quiet laugh.]

I sound like an old man, huh? I can remember my Pop's voice, moaning about how different our music was.

[aigue]

Only a little. Punk isn't for everyone.

[When the song ends, she starts flipping through for something a little different.]

You'd hate death metal. It's all screaming, all the time.

[And she'll play this.]

[After the past two songs the bright and cheery sound of this one takes him by surprise, and he's almost taken in to thinking it's a happy song. But the lyrics are... off. Almost ominous, really. Like all of the others, he waits until it's done before he passes judgement.]

I don't know what I think about that one, maybe I liked it? It was clever.

[And it did have a catchy beat.]

[She isn't surprised he was able to catch on to this one being off, figuring he'd appreciate the meaning behind the lyrics.]

It's about war. Some friends release balloons, which are shot down by both sides of the Berlin Wall and winds up starting a massive war.

Both sides of the Berlin Wall?

[He was in Berlin not that long ago and he doesn't remember a wall there. He doesn't remember one from before the Soldier either.]

What wall?

[aigue]

[Oh... dear. She was assuming he'd have known about it, but it makes sense that he doesn't.]

One result of the Second World War was that Germany was split into two, East and West, Soviet-controlled and Allied-controlled. Berlin was split, and a wall was erected, as a physical and ideological barrier between the two sides.

Oh.

[He was probably there at some point. If one side of Germany was Soviet controlled, and the Soviets held the Soldier for a time, he was likely deployed in that area. But he doesn't remember specifics. That's probably a blessing.]

But it must have come down, right? It wasn't there when I was there in the last couple of years.

[aigue]

It did. In the 1990s it was pulled down and the country was unified. There's some very famous video footage of that, if you ever want to see for yourself.

Maybe one day I will.

[He supposes he could even ask Zephyr for it, a highlight reel of all the things in the last seven decades that he doesn't know about, but he'd rather not.]

Did you ever see the wall in person? Were you there when it came down?

[aigue]

Yes and yes. I love seeing history in the making.

[She pauses where she is, glancing around. They've been walking a while.]

How are you doing?

[advanced]

[He raises an eyebrow at the question. Most people just assume he'll be good to keep up however long they go for.]

I think I have frostbite. Again.

[He doesn't. But damn, his feet are cold.]

[aigue]

[She grins at him, trotting over.]

Maybe we should stop for the rest of the day. I'm getting hungry.

I thought we were gonna get to some lodge with hot water.

[Though he's already swinging his pack down from his back as he says it.]

False advertising, if you ask me.
