She's the one who told Steve, he feels a flare of bright anger when he hears her voice.]

[ She considers her options. She still doesn't know for sure if he's a threat or not, and he knows that, she thinks. It's not a helpful answer. ]

[Part of him wants to tell her that she failed at that. If she hadn't interfered and gone to Steve, he wouldn't have come to Bucky, maybe the Soldier wouldn't have been triggered, and Tifa and Cloud wouldn't be dead.

But it's not her fault. Not really.

It doesn't stop him being furious with her, and exceptionally wary. Someone this nosy, this meddling, is dangerous.]

[ Peggy knows, and she's still alive. It's not Steph's responsibility anymore.

Still, the words make her raise her eyes and chin stubbornly. ]

[She's such an arrogant kid in that moment. Stupid, to be pressing for a fight with someone she's been warned is dangerous, or-- he assumes Steve will have warned her. Surely Steve wasn't so foolish as to just tell people this was his old friend.]

No. It's advice. Stay out of things that aren't your business.

[ She softens a little. Okay, so maybe he's not going to make himself trouble. Not on purpose, anyway. He still scares her, and she hates that. But maybe she can believe this is the friend Steve used to know.

There's still a decidedly stubborn tone to her voice. ]

She has pressed her nose in where it doesn't belong, and she may have ruined everything for him without ever understanding why. Just a stupid child acting like the whole world was her business.]
