Yeah, he did.
[He voice is soft, and she doesn't try to defend Steve. She likes him, but how much this clearly hurt James is what she's more worried about.]
Are you doing okay? [There's a small pause, that urge to tell him that he doesn't have to be okay, but she doesn't want to push, either. So she just leaves it, though there's a glint of empathy in her too-blue eyes.]

[It's not an answer and he knows it, but he can't quite bring himself to admit how much it hurts. Stupid, he's a grown man who spent most of his time here hiding from Steve and pretending he didn't exist, why should he be sad that he chose his life back home instead of being here?]
I'm fine.

[She hadn't known Natasha very long, but that didn't mean that when she abandoned her for years it hadn't eaten at her. It's entirely different situations, but that pain of being left behind is something she still understands.]
Okay.
[She isn't going to push, or tell him he's wrong. But she'll listen if he wants to.]

[Despite the fact that he's the one who sought her out after the messages of before, it still feels as though she was the one who initiated all of this. He wants her to know that he doesn't need it, and definitely doesn't want it.
He wants to be left alone, and yet simultaneously he knows that would be the worst idea for the progress that he's made so far.]

[She doesn't point out that he found her, because she'd been the one to tell him that he could. And she meant it. Tact isn't exactly her strong suit, but she's trying. She knows it can be hard to reach out, and so she wanted to offer, maybe make it so he didn't have to reach so far.]
I want to be.
[It's a small clarification, a look over at him. It's a choice.]
sorry this is a short thread, the thanksgiving one should be longer!
This was a mistake, he never should have come.
All of a sudden he's gone. She's good at what she does, so she'll probably be able to see him scaling the nearest building and then running off over the rooftops.]
hah, it's fine! it was almost inevitable lbr
She's prone to running herself, she understands the need. She wont try to hold him anywhere he doesn't want to be. She stuffs her hands in her pockets and lets her feet lead her the rest of the way home.]
