I am. [Well, sort of. She gets jealous too, as much as Monty does.

She sits up a little more.]

He had a wife and mistress back home, this is just part of who he is.

I suppose as long as you're fine with it.

[He can't help that he still sounds a bit disapproving, but it's also mingled with some concern for her. She says she's okay, but he doesn't know any gal who's really okay with their fella cheating on them.]

It is what it is.

[They hadn't been given a choice in Between, and while they have that here she's gotten attached enough to Monty that his happiness (and her fear of him leaving her) overrides anything else.

She doesn't like that Bucky is still obviously disapproving, though. Normally she's very good at not caring about what other people think about her, but that isn't the case here and it's making her irritated with herself.

She drums her fingers on the table.]

You wanted to know more about Beowulf, right?

[He's disapproving because he doesn't think she seems to happy with it, no matter what she says. Her tone of voice, her choice of words, her body language... it makes him want to go around and talk to Monty about fidelity.

He can appreciate wanting to change the subject, though, so he does so with a gentleness that suggests he thinks she's hurting.]

Sure, tell me all about him.

[Renart shifts uncomfortably. This is why she tries to stay vague when people ask her about her relationship with Monty, she doesn't want to deal with people she likes judging her or being worried about her. It's... awkward. Needless to say she's very focused on her coffee and trying to think more about Beowulf than Monty.]

He liked defeating monsters. Obsessed with it, really. We spent hundreds of years traveling the world, looking for monsters. That, or running into humans who needed a hero for whatever reason.

[Sounds kind of like Steve; he was just obsessed with stopping bullies instead of fighting monsters, but it seems like the same principle.]

You think that's what he's out there doing right now?

[aigue]

Without a doubt. I don't think he'll ever get it through his thick head that there aren't any left.

[Not that she actually minds very much, since the traveling is still nice.]

There are always monsters left in the world.

[Trust him, that's one thing that will never go extinct.]

[aigue]

The kind that breathe fire and fly are all gone. [For clarification from the human-shaped monsters.] He's still searching for them.

You ever think to try and get him to take on the other kind? The world needs heroes, not monster hunters.

[Heroes like Steve, heroes like Beowulf could maybe be?]

[aigue]

He would, occasionally. Usually when we were hunting for the magical kind of monster. Then there were times like the World Wars, where he insisted on helping regardless.

Back home he was teaching another Fairy Tale how to be a hero, too. Was more than happy to do it.

Steve always used to say that sticking up for the little guy was what mattered, not fighting the big fights.

[He misses that man.]

I hope I get to meet your dumbass one day.

I hope so. I want to meet yours, too.

[She hums. Talking about Beowulf is making her feel better.]

I'm not sure if the first thing he would do here would be to go try to have a friendly wrestle with the sea monster, or insist on meeting everyone I've spoken to.

What's to say that he couldn't do both in one day?

[Steve would almost certainly go for the second option, if he didn't spend his whole time just following Bucky around like an abandoned puppy.]

Pretty sure Steve would love you.

[Sleep isn't exactly a necessity for a Fairy Tale.]

Would he? I'm not exactly an upstanding citizen.

Yeah, you're my friend and he's kind of a sap like that.

Well, that isn't such a bad reason.

I think Beowulf would like you. He'd want to take you out drinking.

Wouldn't do much good, I can't get drunk.

[Not since the serum, anyway, even as bastardised as it is.]

Well-- I guess I can here, I have been, but I shouldn't be able to.

Fairy Tales can't either, if we drink enough. He does it because for him that's what you do with friends, sit around in a pub drinking until all hours of the morning.

Seems like kinda a waste of money.

[He pushes a hand through his hair.]

I only ever really had Steve, and drinking wasn't an option for us before the war.

My friend, that is why you start a tab and never actually pay it.

[She became a master of getting out of paying her bar tab.]

Well, maybe we should go drinking here, sometime. The beer tree isn't the same as a proper pub, but it could still be fun.

[As long as she very carefully regulates how much she has it should be fine, right?]

Might not be the best idea.

[He shouldn't be able to get drunk, but he can here.]

The last time I did that, I ended up on John's bed in the middle of the night.

[... That has her looking extremely intrigued.]

[He probably doesn't realize what that sounds like, right??]

He was good about it, though, made me stay all night.
