[She saw him punch Steve, after all, she knows that the two of them aren't on speaking terms currently even if she might not know why. So he has nowhere to go, nothing planned.]
Why?
no subject
[She’s already preparing herself for the rejection, but she has to at least try. The idea of him just roaming the streets all night long didn't sit right with her.]
You interested?
no subject
I'm not him.
[It might seem like a non sequitur of an answer, but it makes sense in his head. She's inviting him because she's attached to who she used to know, keeps projecting him onto the man in front of her now.]
no subject
[It takes her a second, but then her expression falls when she gets what he means.]
That’s not—
I know you’re not. That’s not why I asked.

[This probably isn't the time or place for this discussion, but it's been brewing since they met and apparently this is when it's going to happen.]
It's gotta hurt you to talk to me, unless you're hoping I'm gonna turn back into him?

[She’s not about to tell him that he’s right, but, he is. It does hurt, but in other ways it’s been oddly comforting. He doesn’t know her, he didn’t know her as Skye. So he can’t be disappointed in who she’s become now.]
I’m worried about you.

What did you call him?
no subject
What do you mean—?
I called him Bucky.

Then you can call me James, okay?
no subject
Okay.
[She smiles tiredly, understanding what it was like to feel the need to rebrand herself.]
Offer still stands, James.

[And not just for the offer of the movie. For the first time since they met, he offers her a proper smile, the usual latent tension he carries around her dissipating. It means a lot that she understands, that she'll grant him this barrier of being other to the one she knew.]
Maybe another time, okay?
no subject
It’s hard for her to keep feeling disappointed when he smiles at her like that, and she knows better than to keep pushing.]
Okay.
[It’s progress at least?]
I’ll see you around?
no subject
[His smile lifts even further for a second, approval and appreciation for her not pushing, before it fades away into his usual customary neutrality.]
Another time.
[And then he turns to leave.]
